Kunal Malhotra
General Counsel of Funds and Capital Formation

Location
Menlo Park
Year Joined
2022
Background
Kunal focuses on fund formation, fund operations, strategic product development, and advising on investment management and compliance matters. His work spans the full fund lifecycle—from structuring and launching investment vehicles to supporting deal execution, co-investments, and secondary transactions—while navigating governance, compliance, and operational considerations. Prior to joining TCV, Kunal was the Head of Legal for J.P. Morgan Private Capital, providing legal and strategic counsel for the buildout and launch of J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s first private equity platform, as well as advising deal teams on venture capital, growth equity, and private credit investments. Kunal previously led the legal team supporting closed-end fund launches and early-stage investing by J.P. Morgan Wealth Management’s Alternative Investments Group. Before moving in-house, Kunal was an investment funds attorney at Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Sidley Austin LLP, in each case representing investment managers and financial services companies on a broad range of matters. He has spearheaded the formation of private investment funds and provided ongoing counsel covering deal structuring and execution, as well as investment management and regulatory matters. Before law school, Kunal spent four years working for the Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg administration and the New York City Council where he focused on expanding technology access to underserved New Yorkers and enhancing New York City government’s utilization of technology.
Interests
Outside of work, Kunal is a proud father of two young children and spends much of his free time cheering them on (not too loudly) from the sidelines of their sports games. He and his wife relish traveling to new places and are always looking to beat prior distance records on extended walks. A passionate home cook, Kunal is often testing the limits of his spice tolerance—usually one fiery pepper too far.
Education
Kunal earned his JD from Northwestern University School of Law and his BA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
